The world of Atomfall is a harsh and unforgiving place, where danger lurks around every corner. In this chaos, your weapon is the key to survival — and only you can take care of your gear and ensure your safety.

That’s exactly why I’m writing this blog — to help you stay alive in this mad world. I’ll guide you through how to upgrade your weapons so you’re always ready to defend yourself.

First Steps: Find and Unlock the Gunsmith Skill

Upgrading your weapons is the key to increasing your combat potential. But before you can begin the process, you’ll need to learn the necessary skill. This skill is called Gunsmith, and it’s not available right from the start — which is why your first objective is to obtain the Crafting Manual. You can get this manual from Morris, who lives in Wyndham Village.

Naturally, the game offers multiple ways to acquire it, and you’ll have three choices: trade with Morris, blackmail him, or take the most drastic route — kill the poor guy.

Trading or killing is fairly straightforward, so you probably don’t need a tutorial for that. But if you want to blackmail Morris, you’ll need to investigate St. Katherine’s Church in the village and begin a murder mystery quest.

Head to the Brewery Cellar, located at coordinates 30.5E, 80.5N. There, you’ll find two notes: "Captain Sims Doesn’t Suspect a Thing" and "Kill the One They Call Maisie". These documents directly implicate Morris in Maisie’s murder.

Once you have this evidence, you can confront Morris and threaten to expose him unless he gives you “special treatment,” so to speak. In response, he’ll hand over the Crafting Manual and a Training Stimulant — completely free of charge. Let’s just say you’ve already “negotiated” with him.

By reading or activating the Crafting Manual, you’ll unlock three new skills: Deep Pockets, Crafting Speed, and most importantly, Gunsmith. To fully unlock the Gunsmith skill, you’ll need 7 Training Stimulants. Once activated, the Crafting tab in your menu will expand, giving you access to weapon upgrades and advanced modifications.

An Alternative Way to Unlock the Gunsmith Skill: Data Store Delta

Another way to get your hands on the Crafting Manual is by finding it in the Storage Room of Data Store Delta, located in the Interchange area. To access this room, you’ll first need to climb up the massive data banks in the vicinity and reach a corpse lying on the upper walkway — you’ll find the key to the Storage Room on the body.

Once you’ve got the key, you’ll need to install an Atomic Battery to power the system and activate the Key Reader. Without this, the door simply won’t open. Inside the room, on a metal tray, you’ll find the much-needed manual waiting for you.

Make Sure to Have Two of the Same Weapon

Once you’ve unlocked the new crafting features, you’ll quickly realize that upgrading a weapon requires two identical copies of the same firearm — they’re combined to improve its stats. In addition to this, you’ll also need some Gun Oil and a bit of Scrap. If you’ve been wondering what Gun Oil is for, here’s your answer — it’s essential for the upgrade process.

In Atomfall, weapons come in three levels of quality:

• Rusty — the most basic version, with reduced efficiency
• Stock — standard quality, balanced in performance
• Pristine — rare and powerful, with the best base stats

Each upgrade significantly boosts the weapon’s damage, accuracy, and overall reliability. That makes upgrading your arsenal absolutely vital — especially as you progress through the game and encounter tougher, more aggressive enemies in larger numbers. This becomes even more important on higher difficulty levels.
