Rio de Janeiro has become a legendary destination for Counter-Strike. Fans from all over the world not only travel here to support their favorite teams but also to experience the incredible atmosphere of Brazilian CS.
The “Rio Effect” is exactly what awaits teams and spectators at the iconic Farmasi Arena. A roaring crowd, drums, and unmatched passion make this tournament truly unique compared to European events.
IEM Rio 2026 is part of the ESL Pro Tour Masters, featuring a $1,000,000 prize pool. Of this, $300,000 is allocated to the team and $700,000 to the organization. The winner will receive $125,000 for the team and an additional $170,000 for the organization. In addition, IEM Rio 2026 plays a crucial role in the ESL Grand Slam, where the winner of four tournaments out of ten in the series earns an extra $1,000,000. The closest contender is Team Vitality, which already has three victories. If they win in Rio, the French squad will claim ESL Grand Slam VI and secure the $1,000,000 bonus.

The tournament consists of two stages: the group stage and the playoffs. In the group stage, 16 teams are divided into two groups of eight. Matches are played in a GSL format, where a team is eliminated after two losses. All matches are best-of-three (Bo3). The top three teams from each group advance to the next stage. The group winners move directly to the semifinals, while the second- and third-place teams begin the playoffs from the quarterfinals, with second-place teams receiving a higher seeding.
The playoffs follow a Single Elimination format: a team is eliminated after losing a match. Quarterfinals and semifinals are played as Bo3, while the Grand Final is a best-of-five (Bo5). This means a team must win three maps to secure the title. Such a structure ensures that the strongest team emerges through a series of intense elimination matches.
The main favorite to win in Rio is Team Vitality. They currently show the most consistent results among all participants. Captain apEX effectively leads the team, while star AWPer ZywOo continues to deliver outstanding performances. Every player fulfills their role with precision, making Vitality the top-ranked team in the world.
Despite the dominance of the favorite, several teams could challenge them. Potential finalists include NAVI, Spirit, Falcons, and FURIA. The latter will have an additional advantage thanks to the support of the local crowd. However, before reaching the arena stage, all teams must successfully navigate the group stage. The GSL format always carries the risk of upsets, so even the top teams must stay focused from the very beginning of the tournament.

As mentioned earlier, IEM Rio is part of the race for the additional $1,000,000 prize in the Intel Grand Slam. Currently, four teams still have a chance to win it, with Vitality being the closest contender thanks to their three titles. FURIA, Spirit, and NAVI each have one victory. If Vitality win IEM Rio 2026, they will secure the $1,000,000 bonus as part of Intel Grand Slam IV.
Although qualification for the IEM Cologne Major 2026, scheduled for June, has already been completed, the Rio event still holds major significance. Several big tournaments are still ahead, but this is the stage where teams begin to deeply analyze their opponents’ strategies ahead of the most important event of the season.
For most teams, the key objective remains stopping Vitality’s dominance. If no one manages to defeat them in Brazil, the question of the future Major champion could be decided in advance. Therefore, the results of IEM Rio will show whether any team is capable of taking the initiative and reshaping the balance of power on the global Counter-Strike scene.
