The grand final of ESL One Malaysia 2022 has come to an end. Dota 2 fans all over the world have finished watching the spectacular bo5 series with the participation of Team Aster and the two-time world champions OG.

The tournament in Malaysia has become the last international LAN championship before the start of the qualifications for The International 2022. In this material, we will consider the performance of all participants and evaluate their potential shape in the qualifiers.

11th-12th place — Alliance, Team Liquid

Alliance has performed highly anticipated. The European team was playing with a stand-in in the face of dEsire because Aramis was not able to attend the tournament. Nikobaby and the team made a draw only with Talon Esports and Thunder Awaken, which had been among the potential contenders to hold the last places in the group before the start of the tournament. The famous tag demonstrated a very weak play. Considering the level of competition in the European qualifiers, Alliance will need a miracle to advance to the Last Chance Qualifier, at least.

The map win rate – 20% (2 victories, 8 losses)

Before we talk about Team Liquid’s shape, it is worth noting that the lineup of participants of Group B was much more competitive than Group A. MATUMBAMAN with his teammates only lost to OG but four even results were not enough to claim a slot in the lower bracket. Liquid will have way better perspectives than Alliance but there will be higher-level teams in the qualifiers. Yes, they made a draw with Nigma Galaxy at ESL One Malaysia but there are such teams as Entity and Team Secret in their region. MATUMBAMAN has said that he will retire after The International 2022. So it is unclear what is going on with his mental state because he might not advance to it with such a performance.

The map win rate – 40% (4 victories, 6 losses)

9th-10th place — BOOM Esports, Talon Esports

BOOM Esports can be called the disappointment of the tournament. The representatives of Southeast Asia have performed in a diametrically different way than the expectations. BOOM Esports had been expected to enter the top 8, at least. Or to perform even better than their colleagues from the team Fnatic. Because BOOM has recently prevailed at GAMERS GALAXY: Invitational Series Thailand 2022 and placed 7th-8th at PGL Arlington Major 2022 where competition was higher. Skem and the team defeated OG, having become the first participant to beat the future champions of the tournament. The losses to Nigma Galaxy and Fnatic left no chances for the team to participate in the playoffs. BOOM has already completed the objective for the season and will take part in The International 2022 thanks to 1482 DPC points.

The map win rate – 40% (4 victories, 6 losses)

Despite good play on a local level, Talon Esports is not competitive at the international level. Before the start of the tournament, 23savage and the team had been considered to be a club, which would be one of the very first teams to leave the championship. The statistics 0-3-2 did not help Talon to proceed to the lower bracket. The club predictably lost to Entity and Team Aster but managed to make a draw in the match against Team Secret. Teams from Southeast Asia do not differ with high stability, so the performance of Talon Esports in the TI qualifiers is intriguing.

The map win rate – 30% (3 victories, 7 losses)

7th-8th place — TSM, Nigma Galaxy

TSM had nothing to prove. The team is a participant of The International 2022, having earned 1380 DPC points. DuBu with his teammates spent the group stage stably. The American team finished all 5 matches with a score of 1:1. Which was enough to proceed to the lower bracket. They had to play against Entity in the first round of the playoffs. TSM was not able to deal with the European club, having made 15 kills on two maps. TSM will have time to prepare for the world championship but they will not achieve big results with such a performance.

The map win rate – 41,67% (5 victories, 7 losses)

Nigma Galaxy arrived in Malaysia with a stand-in. It was Dreamocel who replaced Miracle- due to his health issues. The representatives of Western Europe outplayed BOOM and lost to OG, the rest of the matches were over with a draw. The winners of the second division of Western Europe were defeated by Thunder Awaken with a score of 0:2. What is more, the team from South America looked way better than Nigma Galaxy. KuroKy and the team had all chances to advance to The International or the Last Chance Qualifier, at least. But Miracle- will have to recover from the downtime to do this.

The map win rate – 41,67% (5 victories, 7 losses)

5th-6th place — Entity, Thunder Awaken

Entity did well in Group A, having lost only to Thunder Awaken. Having dealt with TSM confidently, Fishman and the team had to face Fnatic. Entity managed to win the first map but Fnatic came back in the series and eliminated Entity. The representatives of Western Europe repeated their results at PGL Arlington Major 2022. The team has demonstrated good shape and will compete for a slot in The International 2022.

The map win rate – 60% (9 victories, 6 losses)

Thunder Awaken has become the first pleasant surprise of the championship. Pandaboo with his teammates made it to the playoffs with statistics 1-2-2. Initially, the Peruvians played against Nigma Galaxy, which was outplayed with a score of 2:0. Their next opponent was the two-time The International champion, the club OG. Having shown competitive play, Thunder Awaken lost to OG with a result of 1:2 and left ESL One Malaysia 2022. Pandaboo and the team have already received a slot in TI, so they will have an opportunity to evaluate all potential opponents and prepare for the main event of the year.

The map win rate – 46,67% (7 victories, 8 losses)

4th place — Fnatic

The team Fnatic has become the main sensation at ESL One Malaysia 2022. After the 9th-12th place at PGL Arlington where the team was playing with three stand-ins, the club came to GAMERS GALAXY: Invitational Series Thailand 2022 with a full main roster and failed, having held the 7th-8th place. The expectations from Jaunuel and his teammates were extremely low but Fnatic surprised.

At the home championship, the representatives of Southeast Asia finished Group B in second place. Fnatic defeated BOOM Esports but lost to OG. Having finished with a result of 1-3-1, Fnatic caught up with Nigma Galaxy in the standings. The teams had to play a tiebreaker in a 1 vs 1 format on the middle lane. Armel outplayed SumaiL in 5 and a half minutes and led his team to the upper bracket. Fnatic managed to win one map against Team Aster in the upper bracket but the Chinese team was stronger. Jabz with his teammates outplayed Entity in the lower bracket. OG was their next opponent. Fnatic defeated OG on the first map but as a result, Chuvash and the team demonstrated the difference in gaming skills and prevailed over Fnatic. The team will go to Singapore at The International 2022, so there is no need to worry about the qualifiers.

The map win rate – 47,37% (9 victories, 10 losses)

3rd place — Team Secret

The top 3 places were held by the teams that many people considered to be the favorites. Team Secret passed the group stage confidently, having outplayed Alliance and Thunder Awaken. Puppey and the team made a draw with the rest of the participants. In the upper bracket, Secret defeated OG and had to play a rematch against Team Aster in the final of the upper bracket. However, the Chinese prevailed over Team Secret and sent them to the lower bracket. In the loser’s bracket final, Puppey with his teammates did not cope with OG, which beat them with a score of 2:0. Considering the current shape, Team Secret can be called one of the main contenders to win the qualification in Western Europe. Zayac and Resolut1on have become a nice reinforcement of the team.

The map win rate – 52,94% (9 victories, 8 losses)

2nd place — Team Aster

Before the start of the tournament, Team Aster was considered to be one of the main contenders to achieve victory in the tournament. And it was mainly true. Aster easily passed Group A, having an even score only with Secret and Entity. In the upper bracket, the Chinese team beat Fnatic and Team Secret, which allowed it to advance to the grand final of ESL One Malaysia 2022. Team Aster lost the grand final with a score of 0:3. Despite the excellent performance by Monet, it was not enough. Xxs and the team finished second and earned $85,000. Team Aster has already become a participant in the world championship, so they will not depend on the regional qualifiers.

The map win rate – 66,67% (12 victories, 6 losses)

1st place — OG

Review of ESL One Malaysia 2022: the last big LAN event before the qualifiers to The International. Photo 12

The two-time The International champions, the team OG arrived at the tournament with one stand-in in the face of Chuvash. The coach of the roster was playing instead of Misha who had faced visa issues. OG finished the group stage with a victory in Group B with a result of 3-1-1. The club was defeated by Team Secret in the upper bracket but then, it outplayed Thunder Awaken. Starting from the semi-final of the lower bracket, OG has a winning series of 7 maps. Yuragi and the team defeated Team Secret and Team Aster with a score of 2:0 and 3:0, respectively, on the final day. The team has demonstrated a nice performance. The victory at the tournament brought $175,000 to OG. OG will also go to The International 2022 directly.

The map win rate – 70,83% (17 victories, 7 losses)

The results of ESL One Malaysia 2022 are represented below:

  • 1st place: OG – $175,000
  • 2nd place: Team Aster – $85,000
  • 3rd place: Team Secret – $45,000
  • 4th place: Fnatic – $25,000
  • 5th-6th place: Entity and Thunder Awaken — $15,000
  • 7th-8th place: TSM and Nigma Galaxy — $10,000
  • 9th-10th place: BOOM Esports and Talon Esports — $5,000
  • 11th-12th place: Alliance and Team Liquid — $5,000

Generally, the obvious favorites have performed predictably well at the tournament. Some teams have disappointed, for example, BOOM Esports and Nigma Galaxy. But there was a pleasant unexpectedness. Very few could predict 4th place by Fnatic. Such teams as Alliance will unlikely be lucky in the qualifiers, considering their level of performance.

Recall that ESL One Malaysia 2022 was hosted on August 23-28 this year. Arena of Stars was a venue located in Genting Highland, Malaysia. 12 teams were fighting for the prize pool of $400,000.
